In and out of Torricella Peligna, Los Angeles and pages of Fante's books, a collection of highly suggestive, valuable statements, to express their love for a writer who became famous and appreciated only after his death on 8 may 1983. This is the mission of "John Fante, a Writer's Profile", a video made by Giovanna Di Lello, a young videomaker from Pescara, which has already received important awards (among them a prize in Los Angeles).
The video was then enriched with other contributions (including those by Piero Pelù and Vinicio Capossela, true Fante fans). Publisher Fazi made a bookstore version (18.50 Euro) accompanied by a booklet containing texts by Charles Bukowski, Francesco Durante, Stephen Cooper, Marco Vichi, Fulvio Panzeri, Sandro Veronesi, Joe R. Lansdale and the short story written by son Dan Fante, published by Il Centro on the anniversary of the writer's death.
Giovanna Di Lello did a great job with this excellent video on John Fante. It is not a mere collection of praising voices. On the contrary, comments on Fante's books are by the persons nearest to him: his wife Joyce Smart, his son Dan, himself a writer, daughter Victoria (Vickie), brother Tom who recollects the family's environment, biographer Stephen Cooper (author of the majestic "Full of Life", Italian edition by Marcos y Marcos).
There are also interviews with such characters as singers Capossela and Pelù (who recites some passages), Francesco Durante, one of the deepest connoisseurs of Fante's work, the translator of a number of his works and the author of this year's Meridiano Mondadori. And also by Furio Scarpelli, Luciano Vincenzoni, A.I. Bezzerides, a colleague scriptwriter in Hollywood, Guido Fink, Fred Gardaphe, and Simone Caltabellota of the Fazi publishing house that together with Marcos y Marcos have by now published all the books written by John Fante.
The video features a narrator, cabaret actor Domenico Turchi, and the handsome voice of Roberto Pedicini, two pure bred Abruzzese who obviously deeply love John Fante's works. The video will be shown on Monday 15, at 19.00, at the Palladium theater in the Roma Tre university.
